SEO Starter Series: Blog About What You Love

Welcome to the third installment of the SEO Starter Series. Sure, you can read a list of things that people can do to set themselves up for decent to great SEO and start off on the right foot. That’s basically what this is all about.

I will say though, that some of the best SEO is created by what you write, simply because it’s something that you’re interested in! Blogging about what you love is one of the best things I can tell anyone. It keeps you interested in the subject at hand, it makes your posts feel informative and interesting, and most of all there WILL be others that share your enjoyment in the same subject that you’re writing about.

I learned the hard way when I first started doing YinzPitt. The site started out with me writing about what I loved which was the city of Pittsburgh, and then eventually ended up being about what I thought people wanted to see in order to increase site stats.

I’m not entirely saying that writing about what people would want to see is a bad thing. I’m simply saying that continually writing about what people want to see when you personally have no interest in the subject at hand is a quick way to kill your motivation in working with a site. It saps results, your mood, and the overall ability of the site to sustain any real readership.

In regards to “Blog about what you love,” writing out posts with your actual thoughts and ideas so people can comment on them is the key to unlocking anything on your site. Love talking about trees? Write about it. It may be a niche market, but the searches are there. People out in the web world are interested about it and they will eventually find your site.

Worried about negative comments or someone disagreeing with you? Who cares, we’re all learning and there’s no stop to that movement. People are always going to disagree, make comments that say otherwise, or just flat out be insulting. NEVER let that stop what you’re trying to do. The thing that you should be most proud of is the fact that it’s getting viewer participation and that’s hard to come by in some instances. So no matter what, never stop writing about what you love, it’s easily the best thing you can do to increase the longevity of your site and finding that place on the internet where people can search and find you. These things are always moving, and as you learn more, post more!
